Winter_2010_030.JPGThis is my wife, Sara and I in Las Vegas. She was running the Las Vegas marathon the next day and we felt like being a bit silly.

This picture is from a somewhat private moment on our wedding day.

This is our greyhound, Venus. She's our four legged, furry and sweet daughter. She's a retired racer and spends most of her time sleeping now.

My name is Josh Hirsch and I am 34 years old. As you can tell from the pictures above, I am married, have no kids, own a beautiful greyhound and, hopefully you can tell, I like to enjoy myself. I have a diverse background as far as life and professional experience is concerned. I grew up in Providence, RI and then received my Bachelors Degree in Philosophy from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. From there, I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and became a college admissions counselor for the College of Santa Fe. While there, I discovered and applied to Up with People, an international, experiential education program. It brings together students from all over the world for a year of international travel, performing arts, and community service all the while living with host families. I had the privilege of traveling throughout the United States, Canada and 5 countries in Europe during this time. After Up with People I moved to Denver.

For several years I worked in a variety of jobs. I did everything from waiting tables, to leasing apartments, to business development for a local University. In the past several years I worked for Landmark Education as a staff member for their Denver office. Working for this company was one of the most profound and challenging experiences I have ever had. After leaving staff in 2007, I began a career as a financial advisor for Trilogy Financial Services. It was during this time when I was training new financial advisors that I realized that my passion was teaching and I decided that I should be pursuing that passion. I began taking classes at Front Range Community College in the fall of 2009 and then at Metro for the Spring of 2010.

My wife is Sara and she is the most important person in my world. We met in July of 2005 and were married in June of 2007. We met online and we were quickly smitten with each other. She is a Spanish teacher at the Denver Center for International Studies. It is a dream position for her and she is the happiest I have seen her in years teaching here.

I have a number of goals as a future teacher. As a lover of all things social science related, I want to impart that love and interest onto my students. Given the nature of the world and the need for increased understanding in this era of globalization, I think it is vital for all students to have at least a little if not a large appreciation and knowledge of history, political science, geography and economics. Specifically, I want students to leave my classroom not just with book knowledge but with a connection to both America and the world itself whether it be through social networking, research, guest speakers or some other medium. I love to teach, coach, train and develop people. It's the highlight of my life to watch someone achieve.
